Our Verdict

When I saw the Teton Sports Scout 55 backpack, I really liked how it looked. It seemed perfect for me because it’s slim and I’m skinny. When I tried it on, it felt really comfortable and snug against my back.

After adjusting the straps, it felt like it was made just for me. I loved how it fit and felt right away! This is the choice for you if you want a fully functional hiking or trekking backpack at the absolute mid-premium cost.

Even though it’s long and slim, this backpack is designed really cleverly. It stays upright and balanced, distributing the weight evenly on your back. This big 55-liter backpack from Teton is a simple travel or hiking bag.

It has plenty of space, some pockets to keep things organized, and it’s comfy and strong enough to last.

Teton Sports Scout 55 Review
It has the most durable fabric of all we had tested but is comfortable enough to put on for a longer period.

Construction And Comfort

The Teton Sports Scout 55 pack has a back panel with lots of padding to keep you comfortable and cool.

It also has cushioned straps on the shoulders, waist, and lower back to make carrying it easier and reduce strain on your muscles.

The 600D ripstop nylon diamond pattern of the TETON Sports Scout 55 Backpack is tough against tears and water. It’s made by weaving thick threads with thin ones for extra strength.

So, if your backpack gets a rip or hole from something sharp, like a branch or a stone from a campfire, it’s not a problem.

It’s important to note that the suspension system on this pack is quite simple, and the foam padding on the lower back might feel a bit uncomfortable if you’re carrying heavy loads for long periods.

The shoulder straps were okay in terms of comfort, but they were covered in a rough fabric. When we put on or took off the pack, the fabric would rub against our skin, making it less comfortable to wear.

Teton Sports
Side pockets don’t offer easy access while on your back.

Ease of Use

The Scout backpack has all the important features we need, but we found some features a bit tricky to use. It has a classic design with a touch of old-school style.

The main compartment is accessible from the top, and we think the bottom zipper works well enough. The elastic flap over the zipper doesn’t usually cause problems, but occasionally it can make it a bit tricky to open.

The top of the pack has a lid that’s permanently attached, so you can’t take it off or adjust it to store extra stuff underneath.

On each side of the pack, there are two pockets: one stretchy pocket at the bottom and one zippered pocket at the top. Both pockets can hold a 1-liter Nalgene bottle, which fits in easily.

Some hikers and travelers found it a bit tough to fit the Teton Sports Scout 55 into these pockets, as the rough fabric sometimes rubbed against their fingers. But personally, I didn’t face anything like that.

Attaching gear to the outside of the pack was quite straightforward for us. The lower straps work well for securing a sleeping pad or tent, and the pack also features ice axe loops for added convenience.

The Teton Sports Scout 55 doesn’t come with a hip belt pocket but don’t worry. The upper pockets are great for keeping other items handy and easily accessible.

Teton Sports
Teton is the heaviest one among all we tested due to high-quality material and ample storage.

Weight-to-Volume Ratio

Out of all the premium backpacks we reviewed, this pack is one of the heaviest, tipping the scales at 4.5 pounds. It’s notably heavier compared to other backpacks.

However, we’re perfectly fine with that because the Teton Sports Scout 55 is made with high-quality materials and provides ample storage choices.

The Scout backpack is said to hold about 55 liters of stuff, which is similar to most of the other packs we tried out. However, if you’re searching for the lightest backpack available, this one might not be the right choice for you.

Teton Sports
We didn’t face any adjustability issues during field testing and we hope the same for you also.

Adjustability

One standout feature of the Scout is its adaptability to various body sizes. Starting with the shoulder straps and focusing on your torso length, you have the flexibility to customize the fit around your shoulders, waist, torso, and chest.

With an adjustable torso length ranging from 15 to 19.5 inches, the hip belt accommodates a wide range of hip sizes, from 26 to 60 inches, making it suitable for teens and most adults.

However, tightening it can be challenging because it lacks a reverse pull-tightening system, unlike our other packs. Additionally, the straps may feel rigid, especially in cold temperatures.

Teton Sports
The backpack provides excellent storage options with multiple pockets.

Storage

It’s just like Hermione’s magical bag! I managed to fit all my stuff for an 8-day trek and still had room left. It’s incredibly spacious. I even fit my large camera bag with a DSLR inside it.

I absolutely love the Top Flap and the two side zippered pockets—they’re incredibly handy! I always store my essentials there—my medical kit, flashlight, hat, sunglasses, and more.

While I’ve seen many backpacks with Top Flaps, they’re often flimsy and attached with delicate-looking straps. But this flap is sturdy, so you can store your items without worrying about damage.

Pro Tip – Utilize the external storage areas for your larger items. If you’re bringing a tent, secure it to the side or front straps. Position your sleeping mat on the lower gear loops. Then, maximize the use of pockets, compartments, and compression straps to evenly distribute the weight of your gear and food within your backpack.

Don’t forget about the zippered side pockets located above the water bottle holders. When grabbing your drink, there’s not much space, so it’s best to use smaller water bottles.

The bottom sleeping bag compartment is spacious you can fit thick sleeping bags or padded jackets and other warm layers.

Inside, there’s a dedicated sleeve for a 3-liter bladder, complete with a tube port at the back. However, if you’d rather have a travel backpack with a laptop compartment instead of a reservoir sleeve, consider checking out the best backpacking backpacks with laptop sleeves or the TriPole Walker 65 Backpack.
