The Safari Prisma Softside Expandable 27-inch is a top choice for those seeking a reliable and affordable soft-sided carry-on.
This versatile mid-range suitcase excels at storing and organizing your belongings, safeguarding them from prying hands, and effortlessly keeping up with you on any adventure.
Its casual, understated design makes it equally ideal for both weekend getaways and cross-country business trips.
Capacity
Weighing in at 6.6 pounds when empty, this softshell suitcase offers a spacious 82 liters of storage in its main compartment, paired with excellent organizational features to help you pack efficiently without losing track of essential items.
You can easily opt to skip the organization and simply toss your belongings into the roomy main compartment.
Either way, the two internal compression straps will keep bulky items in place, ensuring they don’t take over the storage space or shift during transit.
If you prefer to keep things organized, the suitcase includes a set of interior mesh pockets—one inside the lid and another accessory-sized pocket within the midline of the bag—perfect for storing shoes, scarves, belts, or electronics.
Additionally, two generous exterior pockets and an expandable zipper further enhance the bag’s capacity, providing handy spots for last-minute souvenirs or items you’ll need to access quickly at airport security or while checking into your hotel.
During the Bulky Gear packing test, the suitcase’s large central compartment proved capable of holding an impressive amount of items even without using the expansion feature, with everything fitting comfortably.
The high-quality mesh used in the internal pockets was a pleasant surprise, especially after dealing with cheaper suitcase liners that often feel flimsy.
This bag is clearly designed for regular, heavy use. What truly sets this travel-ready softshell apart is its user-friendly features.
It boasts ample storage capacity, easy access compartments in various useful sizes, and convenient front-flip access.
The two exterior pockets on the front of the case are particularly handy—the top one is shallow, perfect for a phone, charger, and travel documents, while the longer sleeve below is ideal for a book or extra layers for your flight.
Inside, additional storage options include a large mesh zip pocket lining the lid, a smaller accessory pocket along the interior wall, and two compression straps to keep everything secure.
Ease of Transport
The Safari Prisma case is equipped with two well-padded fabric carry handles—one on the top and one on the side—designed for comfortable lifting.
Additionally, the extendable roller handle offers multiple lockable height options, providing a stable and ergonomic way to maneuver the bag.
In terms of comfort, this case outperformed nearly all others in our test. The inclusion of an expansion zipper adds flexibility for those extra souvenirs you might pick up along the way, making the Safari Prisma a clear favorite.
Its four single-spinner wheels, though not flawless, are smooth enough to handle most travel conditions.
During testing, we rolled the Safari Prisma over concrete, dirt, grass, and gravel. While its smaller single-spinner wheels didn't navigate rougher terrains as effectively as other cases with larger, sturdier wheels, it performed admirably on smoother surfaces like sidewalks and airport floors.
Although the bag generally rolls smoothly, it doesn't track as well as some other models, occasionally drifting to one side during our tests.
Construction Quality
At first glance, we suspected the Safari Prisma might be compensating for lower-quality materials and construction with an overload of organizational features.
However, once we got our hands on the bag, we were pleasantly surprised by its sturdiness. With each test, this casual soft-sided bag earned our respect.
The thick polyester exterior resisted stains and abrasions, the single-wheeled spinners rolled smoothly and were well-protected in their housings, and the push-button locking telescopic handle provided stable control during use.
Numerous pockets, an expansion panel, and large, easy-glide zippers made packing and organizing a breeze.
However, during more rigorous durability testing, some concerns arose. The drop tests caused minor, but notable damage—the roller handle became slightly rattly within its housing, and scratches appeared on the plastic exterior features.
After a three-foot drop, one of the spinner wheels developed a clicking noise, creating an intermittent and concerning sound during use.
On a positive note, the Safari Prisma performed well in our water tests. Despite its thinner polyester shell compared to other top softshells, it kept all interior and exterior compartments dry after being soaked in rainwater.
Ergonomics
The Safari Prisma stands out for its thoughtful design and well-made components. While it may be on the heavier side, it compensates with a host of practical features built into a sturdy spinner that’s ready to accompany you on any journey.
Its style is slightly more casual and sporty compared to other carry-ons in the test collection, and it doesn’t exude a high-end appearance. However, if luxury isn’t your priority, you’ll appreciate the functional details.
The base is made from scuff-resistant polyester and comes in a range of classic or vibrant colors to suit your style.
It offers a variety of smart organizational features, including two padded carry handles, a push-button locking telescopic handle, multiple internal and external pockets, an expansion zipper, and compression straps, all thoughtfully positioned for easy access and convenience.
Should You Buy the Safari Prisma Softside 27-inch?
We're impressed with what the Safari Prisma delivers at such a reasonable price. While it isn't the cheapest option available, it remains budget-friendly compared to premium suitcases we've tested and offers a noticeable upgrade from lower-end choices.
This translates to a more substantial and dependable carry-on packed with organizational features that simplify travel. It’s a straightforward value proposition: you get a solid bag without breaking the bank.
We think it’s a great choice for family vacations, school trips, or business travel where a polished look isn't essential.
What Other Bags To Consider?
If you’re interested in a similar option from a well-regarded brand, consider the Skybags Rubik 26-inch. However, keep in mind that it has less capacity compared to the Safari Prisma. On the other hand, if you prefer a hardshell suitcase and are willing to invest more for added durability and style, check out the Uppercase Bullet 26-inch and the MOKOBARA 27-inch trolleys.
