Must Read: Best Backpacking Backpacks for Traveling

The Hyper Adam 80 has maintained its legacy as a go-to choice for those accustomed to carrying substantial loads. During our recent field test in Munnar, the latest iteration of this 80-liter backpack impressed us with its sturdy build and unwavering stability.

While the 2022 model shed some features like the Sidekick daypack, rain cover, and pivoting hipbelt, it remains a robust option, albeit on the heavier side, especially for those seeking swifter, lighter travel experiences.

Comfort

The Hyper Adam 80 has long been known for its comfort when handling heavy loads, and the newest version doesn't disappoint.

Carrying my 80-liter pack filled with my usual backpacking gear along with extras for the unpredictable Munnar conditions, I was immediately impressed by how well the pack managed and distributed the weight.

Hyper Adam
The provides decent hip belt pockets for storing mobile and small items.

Its full-perimeter metal frame and compression straps create a robust structure, while the hipbelt and shoulder harness padding strikes a great balance between softness and support, perfect for long days on the trail.

Even with a load exceeding 40 pounds during our trek, the Hyper Adam remained stable and didn’t shift, navigating rough, rocky terrain effortlessly.

The pivoting shoulder straps contribute significantly to its comfort, allowing the pack to move in sync with your body while staying snug, especially beneficial during climbs and technical stretches.

Although the hipbelt no longer rotates like the previous model, its flexible design hugs the body without causing discomfort to the lumbar or hips.

Moreover, it offers more customization with adjustable Velcro padding, a notable upgrade from the fixed placement in the prior version.

Similar adjustability is present in the shoulder straps—simply adjust the backpanel up or down for a better fit.

Ease of Use

The Hyper Adam 80 covers the essentials but doesn’t go beyond that. Some features proved tricky to use, and lacking in practicality. It carries a familiar design with a touch of retro aesthetics.

While the main compartment offers standard top access, the bottom zipper was poorly executed with an obstructive elastic flap, making gear retrieval cumbersome due to the narrow opening.

The fixed top lid didn't earn our favor either—it can’t be removed or adjusted, hindering storage for extra gear underneath and often sitting unevenly on an overstuffed pack. Its pocket suffers from a narrow opening, complicating access to its contents.

Each side of the pack sports two pockets, but squeezing a 1-liter Nalgene bottle into them was challenging due to tight spaces and rough fabric that tended to scrape fingers.

At the bottom, their is rain cover compartment.

The upper pockets, however, serve well for accessible storage, compensating for the absence of waist belt pockets.

External gear attachment is manageable, with lower straps ideal for securing a sleeping pad or tent and dedicated ice axe loops.

The pack features a mesh pocket on the back, albeit smaller than other models tested—insufficient for a rain jacket but adequate for items like a compass or map.

Elastic drawstrings at the pack's rear prove handy for storing clothing, while those on the lid are less practical, further impeding access. Although not detrimental, the top attachment adds no real value to the pack's performance.

Buckles are of decent quality good enough to tolerate heavy loads.

Here Are: Best Affordable Backpacking Backpacks

Weight-to-Volume Ratio

In our budget backpack assessment, this pack falls on the heavier side, tipping the scales at 4.5 pounds for its relatively modest size.

Despite packing in a rain cover that adds little weight, its advertised 80-liter capacity aligns with others we tested.

However, its weight-to-volume ratio is notably high compared to alternatives—a higher ratio indicates a less favorable weight distribution relative to its size.

Given its affordable price, the higher weight-to-size ratio is understandable. Yet, if you prioritize finding the lightest budget backpack available, the Hyper Adam 80 might not be your ideal choice.

Adjustability

Choosing the large size in the Hyper Adam 80 proved spot-on for my 18-inch torso and 31-inch waist, ensuring a great fit.

The revamped shoulder strap design offers precise adjustments through a Velcro setup (ideal for torsos ranging from 17 to 20 inches).

Similar adaptability applies to the hipbelt, allowing up to 3.5 inches of lateral adjustment via Velcro, providing easy customization for comfort.

Additionally, the pack is available in small (suitable for 16-19 inch torso lengths and 26-48 inch waists) and medium (17-19 inch torso lengths and 30-52 inch waists) sizes, catering to a broader range of body types.

Protection

Despite its standard durable water repellent (DWR) coating and provided rain cover, the Hyper Adam 80 falls short in standalone weather resistance.

On our trip, encountering mostly dry conditions and sporadic light rain showers, relying solely on the pack's built-in features wasn't a major issue. However, for genuinely severe weather, I deem a pack cover indispensable.

Granted, the bottom, sides, and hipbelt pockets managed to shield my belongings from splashes during numerous river crossings, maintaining their dryness.

Yet, for enhanced protection, I strongly advocate utilizing a pack cover or waterproofing your gear with dry bags as an added precaution.

Hyper Adam
Zippers are smooth and easy to move without any obstruction.

Build Quality

As previously mentioned, the Hyper Adam 80 stands out as a notably weighty backpacking pack, tipping close to 5 pounds.

However, it compensates for this weight with an abundance of robust and confidence-instilling materials used throughout its construction.

The pack strikes a balance between weight and durability, employing high-quality zippers and a blend of lightweight 210-denier (D) nylon with sturdy 420D high-density nylon, while the base enjoys added reinforcement with an even thicker 630D nylon.

Overall, durability emerges as a significant highlight of this pack, making it a compelling choice for avid outdoor enthusiasts who frequently put their gear through demanding situations.
